Meet the Literacy Specialist

Hello, I'm Dr. Collins. I've been teaching children over 12 years and I love it! My passion is literacy and my hope is to ignite a love of reading and writing in others. Currently, I work full time in a public elementary school teaching students who have English as a second language.

I first conceived of Literacy Bridge Tutoring when I saw students continuing to struggle with reading in the classroom, which then led to a difficulty in the writing process. Having directed one-on-one instruction made it possible for me to create individualized lessons for each student, and cater to their specific needs. By using the Take Flight program, the reading code "clicked" for students allowing them to spell with better accuracy, read fluently, and better comprehend text. In writing, I use the Self Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) process to help students construct paragraphs or essays in any genre. Both Take Flight and SRSD in writing have increased students' abilities and confidence.

All students deserve to have compassion and support to achieve their full academic potential. I am constantly attending workshops, trainings, or reading professional articles to learn and keep my knowledge on trends and practices current in education.

It is important to me to keep your child engaged and feeling successful in their learning with evidence based strategies. Whether your child has been identified as dyslexic or needs academic support, we will collaborate to determine the best way to meet their needs.
